Wake For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.
She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.
Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant....
My review: Before reading Wake, I was a little unsure of the concept of the book. The whole participating in other people's dreams seemed a little out of reach for me. Man, was I wrong!
I am so glad that I took a chance, stepped outside my usual preferences, and read Wake. Lisa McMann has an awesome gift of characterization. Each of the characters seemed so real and I could relate them to myself or compare them to people I've encountered in my life. All authors don't have this ability, only the really good ones, like Lisa, possess such skill.
I am not an extremely fast reader right now because my time is so consumed with other things. However, I stayed up late at night and put some of my typical daily activities aside, so I could finish this one. It was full of suspense and I was constantly asking myself, "What next?"
If you haven't already read Wake, what on earth are you waiting for? It truly is a page turner.
The year 2008 has been full of remarkable YA novels. Wake is definitely near the top of that list.
Lisa's sequel to Wake, Fade, will be out in stores in February. Be sure to keep your eye out for it (I know I will). In the meantime, check out Lisa's blog for some cool events leading up to its release. And beginning Tuesday, she will be hosting an essay contest for those between the ages of 14-18. Details can be found on her website (but not until Tuesday).
All right, time for you to sound off. What did you guys think about Wake? Who's with me and counting down the days for the release of Fade?
